How do I replace a mechanical water pump?

Mechanical water pumps are driven by a V-belt or timing belt. This connection must be removed.

Step 1 : First, raise one side of the vehicle on a jack stand and remove the affected wheel.

Step 2 : Wait until the engine is cold, then drain the coolant.

Step 3 : Collect the coolant in a container for disposal.

Step 4 : You may need to move the tensioner pulley to remove the V-belt or timing belt.

Step 5 : Unscrew the water pump pulley.

Step 6 : Remove all tubes and hoses attached to the water pump.

Step 7 : Unscrew the water pump mounting bolts and remove the water pump.

Step 11 : Replace the gasket or create a gasket with the gasket tab (if not supplied).

Step 12 : Install the new water pump with its new gasket, making sure the model matches the old one.

Step 13 : Tighten the pump bolts.

Step 14 : Reattach all cables and hoses and secure the pulley.

Step 15 : If the pulley is driven by a toothed belt, check the timing.

Step 16 : Replace the wheel and place the car back on the ground.

Step 17 : Fill the coolant tank and loosen the bleed nipple(s) to remove air from the system. The bleed nipples are located either on the engine radiator, on a high hose, or on the thermostat housing.

Note : If the bleed nipples are above the maximum coolant reservoir level, you'll need to raise the reservoir or use a plastic bottle:

  • Prepare a plastic bottle (1.5L) with the bottom cut off.
  • Insert it into the filler neck (seal the joint with a cloth).
  • Fill the system with coolant.
  • Watch for air bubbles escaping from the bottle and traps.
  • Close the bleed nipple(s) when coolant flows continuously (without air bubbles).

Step 18 : Now run the engine to remove any remaining air from the cooling system.

Step 19 : Start the engine with the hood up.

Step 20 : Run the engine for a few seconds, then accelerate for the first time.

Step 21 : Observe the evacuation of air bubbles in the fuel tank or expansion tank.

Step 22 : As the air is expelled, the coolant level will drop, so top off as necessary.

Step 23 : Repeat the process until air bubbles are eliminated.

Step 24 : Remove the cylinder and close the tank.

Step 25 : Increase the temperature until the cooling fan engages.

Step 26 : After the fan stops, slowly open the tank to release the pressure.

Step 27 : Top off the tank if necessary.

Step 28 : Allow the engine to cool down (about 4 hours).

Step 29 : Check the coolant level again.

Step 30 : Finally, carefully rinse off any traces of coolant with water. Be careful not to splash the ignition system or electronic components.

Can I change my water pump myself?

You can change it yourself. But be careful. You must be diligent and have some knowledge of the subject. If you have any doubts about your mechanical skills, it's best to hire a professional. It's a time-consuming and somewhat complex operation, so make sure you understand all the steps if you decide to do it yourself.
