Halogen headlights are the first thing that comes to mind when talking about traditional vehicle headlights. As you might expect, halogen headlights are equipped with halogen bulbs. In fact, this is the oldest type of headlight, first appearing in 1965. Because halogen headlights consume a lot of energy, they are increasingly giving way to other types of lighting, such as halogen or LED headlights.

What are halogen headlights?

The halogen lighting system in a vehicle is, in a sense, an evolution of the incandescent bulb. These are the classic headlights that are currently found on basic versions of cars. Recognizable by their small gray cap and base, halogen bulbs are the most common, the least expensive, and the cheapest to manufacture. They are easy to replace.

A halogen bulb looks like a light bulb. Inside is a tungsten filament that becomes incandescent when the light is turned on. Light output and longevity are increased by the presence of a halogen gas, such as bromine or iodine.  Inside the glass bulb filled with halogen gas, a tungsten filament is heated by electricity to emit bright light in the halogen headlight. The higher the quality of halogen bulbs, the more accurately the filaments are positioned. This allows halogen headlights to illuminate the road properly.

Halogen bulbs are marked with the letter "H": H1 is a single-filament bulb, and H4 is a dual-filament bulb that allows high and low beams to be controlled with a single light source. H7 is the perfect version of H1, which is brighter. In the case of H4 halogen bulbs, the low and high beam functions are provided by a split filament. Halogen headlights are still very popular because of their good price/performance ratio. At night, their yellowish-white color is pleasing to the eye.

Although they are said to be less powerful than xenon headlights, they can come close if you choose brand-name bulbs. With optimal adjustment, halogen headlights provide high light intensity at dusk and at night, which will satisfy most drivers. The bulbs used in lower-class cars are often of mediocre quality. They can be replaced at little cost. Be warned, however, that changing bulbs on certain models can be time-consuming and costly.

What are the benefits of halogen headlights?

Halogen headlights are the most common type of lighting.  They are very easy to install and remove from the vehicle. However, you must be careful when handling them. Halogen headlights are very fragile: a simple dent in the glass can affect the performance of your halogen headlight or even break it.

Halogen headlights are not affected by outside temperatures. And don't forget, they're very affordable compared to other headlights. They can also be adapted to all vehicle models and are available in a range of sizes to ensure a perfect fit.

But this type of headlight doesn't just have advantages. When exposed to high temperatures, your headlight can heat up quickly. This means that its life can be very short. What's more, a large portion of its electrical energy is dissipated in the form of heat. This energy is 92%.

What is the difference between a halogen headlight and a xenon headlight?

The xenon headlight is a different, more modern model of car headlight. Instead of a halogen bulb, there is a xenon bulb that provides greater luminosity. They are therefore more effective at ensuring driver visibility. Compared to halogen headlights, which produce only 1400 lumens, xenon headlights produce 3000 lumens. Lumen is the unit used to measure luminous flux.

But xenon headlights don't just have advantages. It is a tire that can cause severe glare. Xenon headlights give off a lot of heat, which can damage electrical cables. It is therefore advisable to install them on headlights that are used regularly, such as brake lights or turn signals. They also cost more than halogen headlights, although they last longer. For this reason, xenon headlights are mostly found on top-of-the-line vehicles.

Halogen headlights offer a number of advantages, including ease of installation, insensitivity to outside temperatures, and compatibility with all types of vehicles.
