The ABS sensor is one of your vehicle's sensors. It is part of the ABS system that prevents your wheels from locking during an emergency stop. Your car's ABS system uses sensors on each wheel to send information about the wheel's rotational speed to the computer. If a sensor fails, the ABS system will not work properly. Symptoms of an ABS sensor failure include the ABS warning light on the dashboard coming on and the wheels locking under braking.

Sensors are used to transmit data from the vehicle's various electronic systems. Speed sensors play an extremely important role in driving safety, as evidenced by their presence in various vehicle systems.

Wheel speed information is also communicated by the ABS ECU via data cables to other systems (engine, transmission, navigation and chassis control systems).

What types of ABS sensors are there?

Depending on your vehicle model, there are two main types of ABS sensors: Depending on how they work, there are active and passive wheel speed sensors.

  • Active ABS sensors:This type of sensor is compatible with wheels equipped with magnetic encoders (called gear wheels). They require external power to operate. The ABS sensor receives a square wave signal whose frequency is proportional to the speed of the tire. However, the intensity of the signal is not conditioned by speed.   • Passive ABS sensors:These are equipped with a coil covered by a magnetic core and a permanent magnet. Passive ABS sensors work only when the wheel reaches a certain minimum speed. The magnetic flux emanating from the teeth and recesses of the wheel produces an output voltage equal to the rate of change detected by your sensor. The voltage will vary in both magnitude and frequency depending on the distance from the wheel and the speed of rotation.

How do I clean the ABS sensor?

If your ABS warning light comes on, your ABS sensor may be malfunctioning. Dirt can build up on the sensor and interfere with its operation. In such cases, cleaning may be the solution.

There are several steps you'll need to take:

  • Raise your vehicle:First, you'll need to raise your vehicle using a jack and jack stands. Then you'll need to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove your ABS sensor:to help you identify it, the sensor is located behind the wheel. Once you've located it, remove the bolts that secure the sensor to the suspension.

If you have trouble removing them, don't hesitate to apply degreaser to them and leave it on for a few minutes. Finally, remove your ABS sensor with a pair of pliers using circular movements. Be careful not to damage your ABS sensor.

  • Clean your ABS sensor:You'll need soapy water, a microfiber cloth, and a brush to remove dirt and rust. Spray the ABS sensor area with compressed air to clean it.

Don't hesitate to use the brush to remove any rust that may have settled there. Once you've thoroughly cleaned the sensor, you can reassemble it.

  • Good to know: Don't use chemicals on your ABS sensor. This could damage it.
  • Reassemble your wheel:Place your wheel in the correct position and tighten the mounting screws. Then repeat the process for all your ABS sensors and lower your vehicle.

To make sure everything is working properly, turn on the ignition. If the warning light still illuminates, consider taking your vehicle to a service center for a diagnostic check.
